Differential diagnosis
When listening to the murmur HCM must be differentiated from Aorta/pulmonary Stenosis,  ventricular septal defect and innocent flow murmurs.  Since systolic murmur in many countries do not get proper attention and are often considered un-important relative to diastolic murmurs, a verification by the squatting maneuver is a quick and easy way to discard or confirm a suspicion of HCM.
