Symptoms
The
majority of HCM patients are asymptomatic. Unfortunately, the first sudden
death bay well be the first and final symptom as mentioned earlier with
young athletes. It is therefore of vital importance to detect the systolic
murmur associated with HCM.
HCM
is genetically bound and family history if of outmost importance. In
families where sudden death has occurred, first degree relatives should
undergo screening.
As
the disease progresses, one or more of several classic symptoms of heart
failure will occur:
- Dyspnea
(shortness of breath)
Angina pectoris (Chestpain)
Palpitation (Extra awareness of heartbeats, extra heartbeats, followed
by dizziness)
- Fatigue
- Light-headedness
- Blackouts
