Symptoms
The majority of HCM patients are asymptomatic. Unfortunately, the first sudden death bay well be the first and final symptom as mentioned earlier with young athletes. It is therefore of vital importance to detect the systolic murmur associated with HCM.

HCM is genetically bound and family history if of outmost importance. In families where sudden death has occurred, first degree relatives should undergo screening.

As the disease progresses, one or more of several classic symptoms of heart failure will occur:

  • Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
    Angina pectoris (Chestpain)
    Palpitation (Extra awareness of heartbeats, extra heartbeats, followed by dizziness)
  • Fatigue
  • Light-headedness
  • Blackouts
