Treatment
Patients
with mild mitral regurgitation may only require antibiotic prophylaxis.
Later in the development, a mild diuretic or vasodilator will be effective
in reducing ventricular afterload, promoting the forward flow, thus
reducing the regurgitation. At the very latest stage, surgical
intervention may be considered. Atrial fibrillation may require treatment
to control the ventricular rate.
