Treatment
The objective of drug therapy for Mitral Stenosis is to:

  • Reduce left atrial pressure
  • Control ventricular rate
  • Prevent systemic thromboembolism

Anti-arrythmic agents are used, sometimes in combination with beta-blockers or calcium antagonists. Beta-blockers alone are also sometimes used. Diuretics may be used to fight fluid retention, and anti-coagulants are used to prevent thromboembolism. Antibiotic prophylaxis is advised prior to dental procedures.

In severe Mitral Stenosis, surgical procedures are considered, either by balloon valvoplasty or by valve replacement.
